Lt. Governor Henry Hamilton

Hamilton, who was known to Americans as the vicious "Hairbuyer" Hamilton (even though there is little evidence that he actually gave rewards specifically for scalps) was likely born in Ireland around 1734 as part of an influential provincial family. His grandfather had held the title of Viscount Boyne and his father had served in local government and also held collector positions at the ports of Dublin and Cork. At age 21, Hamilton joined an Irish regiment and arrived in North America during the Seven Years’ War, rising to the level of Brigadier Major. During Clark’s campaign, Henry Hamilton was serving as the British Lieutenant Governor of the West. He was stationed at Detroit.
