Joseph Bowman was born in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. By 1777, he had settled near Harrodstown, Kentucky, an area that was plagued with Indian attacks. Bownman, along with three of his brothers served in the American Revolution. For much of Clark’s campaign, Bowman was considered the second-in-command. Sadly, he was injured by a gunpowder explosion in August of 1779 after capturing Fort Sackville.
