François Busseron was born in 1748 in the present-day U.S. Midwest, which was controlled by France at the time. He was a fur trader, general store operator, militia captain and acting Mayor of Vincennes. He sided with the Americans during the Revolutionary War and even extended $12,000 in credit to Clark (which Clark never repaid). His general store was also integral in selling goods to the Americans during their time in Vincennes.
