Number of Fraktur By County

My observations:

The map shows that Bucks County and Lancaster County have the most number of Fraktur created there (with 164 in Bucks and 202 in Lancaster). There are also a fair number in Berks County, Lehigh County, and Montgomery County. This makes sense, as these are some of the first areas settled by German immigrants in the 1700s and 1800s. Many of these counties also retain a good number of people that many today regard as the Pennsylvania Dutch — Amish, German Baptists and Mennonites. There are less Fraktur produced in the Western counties of the state. This might be attributed to the fact that this part of the State was settled later than the Eastern section. By the time a German family made it to western Pennsylvania, they were normally two or three generations removed from the direct German immigrants. Perhaps this made them less likely to embrace German traditions?
