Fraktur Over Time

My observations:

The Fraktur in this collection were first created in southeastern Pennsylvania. By 1800, no Fraktur had yet been produced in the Western half of the State. By the 1820s, Fraktur were starting to show up in the West. They had even made it out to Indiana by 1818. Even so, the Fraktur creation continued to be concentrated around Philadelphia. The large amount of growth in new Fraktur drops off in the 1880s. This makes sense, according to current Fraktur scholarship, which argues that the period of greatest popularity for Fraktur was from 1750-1850. Scholars also assert that the coming of English speaking common schools to Pennsylvania in the 1830s made the number of newly produced Fraktur dwindle.
