Camping

After crossing the Kaskaskia River and marching about 3 miles, what did the expedition do next? Look first at Clark’s account and record your findings.

Then, read over Bowman’s account. Did he report anything similar?

Now compare what you found with this example.

What did we find?

Clark’s account tells us how long they camped -- “until the 8th” -- while Bowman’s account tells us how the camp was set up -- “in a square, baggage in the middle, every company to guard their own squares.”

Why do you think they concentrated on different details while giving their accounts? Might it have anything to do with their different positions -- Clark as the commander and Bowman as the second-in-command?
